In my Information Architecture class, we had to choose various sites to analysis for user experience. I used Progress Insurance as my sole example throughout the entire semester and the group project. I did this to become well aquainted with the experience.
The primary problem with the Progressive mobile app’s navigation system is that it prioritizes aggressive marketing and secondary features over core user tasks, resulting in a high-friction, fragmented user experience. Instead of guiding the user efficiently toward essential account management tools, the interface suffers from severe visual clutter, a lack of persistent global navigation, and a convoluted user flow that increases interaction cost.
This current navigation structure creates an unnecessary cognitive load, forcing users to dig through irrelevant cross-selling content to complete fundamental tasks, ultimately violating several core IA and UX principles such as:
Aesthetic and Minimalist Design: a highly cluttered Home page
Consistency and Standards: Every page seems a bit different, button types switch for no reason
User Control and Freedom: Back button is small and in the wrong space for the phone OS
The Principle of Choices: Everything is smashed into the home page, and instead of useful drop down menu, it consist of various legal links, forcing the user to go though everything on the Home page instead of a quick find
The core philosophy of this redesign is to bring data to meet design. By utilizing established UX heuristics and user behavior data, this project transforms the Progressive web app from a fragmented, sales-driven interface into a streamlined, task-oriented tool. The primary objective is simple: fast access to insurance data. Because insurance is an inherently administrative (and often boring) necessity, users should be able to retrieve what they need and get
back to their lives as quickly as possible. This redesign removes away aggressive upselling, prioritizes the most critical information upfront, and creates a cohesive, frictionless environment.
The target demographic encompasses car drivers aged 18 to 75 who are comfortable using mobile
applications to manage their information and process online payments. Because this age range spans
varying levels of digital literacy and visual acuity, the interface must prioritize extreme clarity,
accessibility, and intuitive wayfinding.
Core User Personas:
The Stressed Driver (Mike): In high-pressure contexts (example: being pulled over), Mike has zero patience for complex navigation. He requires immediate, one-tap access to view, download, or share his ID card without multi-step friction.
The Shaken Accident Victim (Nancy): Experiencing shock or high stress, Nancy requires an application that offers profound cognitive ease and a strictly minimalist aesthetic. She needs a calming, reassuring funnel to the "Accident Claim Center" free from cross-selling distractions.
The Overwhelmed Novice (Missy): Highly susceptible to decision fatigue, Missy simply wants to log in and pay her monthly premium. She needs a direct route to a clearly stated balance and payment portal without being forced through marketing pop-ups.

Aesthetic and Minimalist Design: The current Home page is highly cluttered and visually overwhelming.
Consistency and Standards: The interface lacks cohesion. Layouts change depending on the page, and button types switch without structural reasoning.
User Control and Freedom: The "Back" button is disproportionately small and placed in the wrong spatial zone for modern smartphone operating systems.
The Principle of Choices: Everything is smashed onto the home page. Instead of a useful, focused menu, the screen is polluted with various legal links and marketing blocks, forcing the user to sift through a "wall of text" rather than utilizing a quick-find architecture.
To resolve the structural and visual inconsistencies of the current app, the redesign establishes strict, universally applied guidelines to ensure a cohesive experience across every screen.
Dark Mode & Accessibility: The entire application will be designed in a high-contrast Dark Mode to reduce eye strain, minimize glare in low-light emergency situations (example: nighttime accidents), and strictly adhere to ADA compliance standards.
Minimalist UI Palette: Color will be used strategically rather than decoratively. The palette will be restricted to the core "Progressive Blue," utilizing slight variations and clean iconography to indicate interactive elements and hierarchy without overwhelming the user.
Structural Consistency: Every screen will follow a standardized grid. Button styles, typography scale, and padding will remain identical whether the user is viewing a policy or paying a bill.
The redesigned Information Architecture implements a strict top-down hierarchy to reduce cognitive load, utilizing a hybrid of two highly effective mobile navigation patterns: Global Header & Tabbed View Navigation To eliminate the frustrating "zig-zag" pattern of the original app, the redesign introduces a persistent global navigation structure.
Top Menu Global: A clean header providing immediate access to the highest-priority, highstress tasks: Account, View ID, Pay/View Bill, and Contact Us.
Global Footer (Tabbed View): A persistent bottom tab menu will anchor the user experience, allowing them to easily switch between core contexts. To satisfy business marketing goals without violating the Principle of Choices, secondary functions (such as Bundle & Save and Legal) will be relegated to this footer, keeping them accessible without polluting primary user pathways.
Nested Doll Task Flows For deeper, multi-step processes, such as filing a complex claim or reviewing intricate policy details, the architecture will utilize a Nested Doll (List) layout. Users will tap broad categories that slide smoothly forward into more detailed lists. This linear, forward-and-backward flow provides an incredibly intuitive sense of progression and prevents the user from feeling lost deep within the app.
The redesigned IA resolves critical UX failures by intentionally separating emergency tasks from maintenance tasks, and isolating marketing materials to the global footer.
By replacing the original "wall of text" with clearly defined, intent-driven branches, the design drastically reduces the time it takes to execute a task. The architecture anticipates emergency use-cases by placing highly visible action nodes (like "VIEW ID CARD") directly off the home screen. Furthermore, replacing confusing payment flows with a clear, immediate action node ("YOU OWE $XX.XX ON X/XX/XXXX") routes novice users directly to the Pay Portal.
Ultimately, this redesign successfully transforms a sales-driven interface into a streamlined, user centric tool. It restores the Principle of Focused Navigation and aligns the digital experience perfectly with real-world user needs.
To execute this vision, the following assets will be delivered:
Draft Wireframes: Low-fidelity structural blueprints mapping the Tabbed View and Nested Doll architectures.
Final Wireframes: High-fidelity, ADA-compliant Dark Mode mockups demonstrating the cohesive visual design, minimal Progressive Blue palette, and streamlined user flows.
Justification Document: This comprehensive brief detailing the UX heuristics and user-centric logic driving the redesign.
